Mechanism of Action
The oil acts as a bio-mimetic emollient, integrating high levels of oleic and linoleic acids into the stratum corneum to reinforce the hydrolipidic film. It actively repairs the skin barrier by upregulating filaggrin (FLG) expression and modulates inflammatory responses by inhibiting cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α via the NF-κB pathway. Additionally, its polyphenolic content and Vitamin E fractions scavenge reactive oxygen species and inhibit MMP-1 enzymes to halt collagen degradation.

Clinical Evidence
High confidence1%
Key findings
- 01 A 1% topical formulation demonstrated significant suppression of Trans-Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) and measurable improvements in human skin barrier integrity.
- 02 In vitro analysis at concentrations as low as 0.01% to 0.1% showed a dose-dependent increase in type I procollagen production and successful inhibition of collagen-degrading MMP-1 enzymes.
- 03 Pure 100% tea seed oil has been shown to exert antimicrobial activity against common pathogens including S. aureus.

Dusting Analysis
While in vitro collagen benefits appear at very low levels (0.01%), meaningful barrier repair and TEWL suppression clinically manifest at 1%. Formulas using it at 'claim' levels below 0.1% may be leveraging the name without providing functional lipid replenishment.

Stability
Highly susceptible to oxidative rancidity due to its unsaturated fatty acid profile; must be stored in airtight, UV-protective packaging. Stability is significantly enhanced when paired with secondary antioxidants like Tocopherol (Vitamin E).
Synergies
- Vitamin E (Tocopherol)
- Squalane
- Ceramides
Conflicts
- High-heat processing (>60°C)
- Pro-oxidant metal ions (Iron, Copper)
- Strong oxidizing agents
Safety
Safety Profile
Evaluated by the CIR in 2011 and deemed safe in current cosmetic practices. It is a non-irritating botanical oil suitable for long-term topical use.
