Mechanism of Action
This extract functions as a powerful antioxidant by neutralizing free radicals, thereby mitigating oxidative stress and visible signs of aging such as wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Its polysaccharides contribute to enhanced skin hydration by strengthening the epidermal barrier and acting as humectants. Furthermore, it exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, calming irritated or sensitive skin, through specific compounds like artocarpesin that suppress inflammatory mediators (Nitric oxide, prostaglandin E2) and down-regulate iNOS and COX-2 expressions. Flavonoids further support this by inhibiting inflammatory mediator release from immune cells. Preliminary evidence also suggests contributions to even skin tone and mild photoprotection.

Key findings
- 01 A jackfruit seed extract ('Whitessence') significantly reduced capsaicin-induced unpleasant skin sensations (burning) in the nasolabial facial area in 24 subjects, demonstrating anti-inflammatory and soothing properties.
- 02 Ethanol extracts from Artocarpus heterophyllus leaves, when formulated into clay masks, dose-dependently improved facial skin smoothness and moisture. The highest improvements were observed at 5% concentration, with a 10.0% increase in smoothness and a 7.3% increase in moisture. A 3% concentration also led to the highest decrease in pore size by 13.4%.

Stability
The antioxidant activity of proteins from jackfruit seeds can be affected by pH, though a specific optimal pH range for cosmetic formulations is not specified. This extract can be incorporated into various forms including solutions, emulsions (W/O, O/W, W/O/W, O/W/O), hydrodispersions, lipodispersions, Pickering emulsions, gels, solid sticks, and aerosols. It is also suitable for aqueous systems or surfactant preparations for cleansing.
