Mechanism of Action
The extract functions primarily as a Kallikrein 5 (KLK5) inhibitor. By blocking this serine protease, it prevents the conversion of inactive cathelicidin into the pro-inflammatory mediator LL-37. This action suppresses the release of cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β while inhibiting mast cell degranulation. Furthermore, it regulates vascular endothelial cell activity via the FPRL1-mediated MAPK signaling pathway, effectively reducing visible redness and unwanted angiogenesis.

Key findings
- 01 In vitro inhibition of KLK5 protease activity demonstrated at concentrations of 10-50 µg/mL (Roh et al., 2022).
- 02 Significant antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus achieved at concentrations of 2.5-5.0 mg/mL (Mao et al., 2018).

Dusting Analysis
Due to its popularity in 'clean beauty' marketing, it is frequently used at trace amounts (<0.1%) which are insufficient to reach the bio-active threshold (10-50 µg/mL) required for KLK5 inhibition and effective rosacea management.
The Formula
Formulation
Stability
Bioactive polyphenols and terpenoids are heat-sensitive and volatile. The extract must be incorporated during the cool-down phase below 40°C and stored in light-protected, opaque packaging.
Synergies
- Niacinamide
- Centella Asiatica
- Panthenol
Conflicts
- Strong oxidizing agents
- Highly alkaline environments (pH > 8.0)
Safety
Safety Profile
While not individually monographed by the CIR, it has a long history of safe use in Asian skincare at concentrations reaching 90% without systemic toxicity.
