Mechanism of Action
Argan oil deeply hydrates the skin and meticulously balances its lipid barrier, which is crucial for supporting a healthy cutaneous microbiome. Its rich profile of vitamin E (predominantly gamma-tocopherol), essential fatty acids (oleic and linoleic acids), polyphenols, and squalene provides potent antioxidant effects. It reduces oxidative stress by preventing DNA damage, protein carbonylation, and lipid peroxidation, while simultaneously fortifying the skin's intrinsic antioxidant defenses. The oil also precisely modulates inflammatory responses by decreasing pro-inflammatory biomarkers and elevating anti-inflammatory markers, likely through the regulation of key signaling pathways like Nrf-2 and NF-κB. Furthermore, the sterols present in argan oil contribute to the regenerative processes within the epidermis.

Key findings
- 01 A 5% concentration of argan oil in a face serum demonstrated no primary cutaneous irritation or sensitization in a human study involving 108 subjects.
- 02 A 10% concentration in a skin salve was confirmed as a non-sensitizer in an HRIPT study with 209 subjects. A subsequent 4-week use test (51 subjects across various body parts) indicated no significant dermal irritation or dryness, although mild, transient erythema was observed in a small number of subjects (2 on lips, 5 on elbows/lips/knees), and 15 subjects reported subjective irritation.
- 03 Topical application, including pure oil, improved skin elasticity by increasing R-parameters (R2, R5, R7) and decreasing RRT over 60 days of daily use in postmenopausal women. A synergistic effect was noted when combined with dietary consumption.
- 04 Immediate and sustained improvement in skin hydration, leading to perceptibly softer and smoother skin within 1-2 weeks of regular use, along with observed reductions in inflammation and redness, was reported in postmenopausal individuals with a few topical drops.
- 05 In a sebum control cream containing argan oil alongside saw palmetto extract and sesame seeds, 95% of subjects experienced effective lessening of greasiness and improved appearance of oily facial skin over a 4-week period.

Dusting Analysis
Argan oil is a liquid oil and thus not prone to 'dusting' concerns typically associated with powdered or solid particulate ingredients.

Stability
Cosmetic argan oil maintains stability for approximately 1 year at 25°C when meticulously protected from light. Optimal storage requires tightly closed original containers, in a cool, dry, and ventilated area, shielded from heat sources and direct sunlight, with minimal air contact to mitigate oxidative spoilage. Physical refining processes are known to significantly diminish argan oil's oxidative stability due to the reduction in tocopherol content. Formulations incorporating argan oil exhibit stability within an acidic pH range of 4.0 to 5.84, aligning precisely with the physiological pH of human skin (4.5 to 6.0).

Safety
Safety Profile
The CIR Expert Panel has concluded that Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil and Hydrogenated Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil are safe as used in cosmetic products, based on extensive safety data including historical food use and demonstrated lack of dermal irritation or sensitization. While generally safe for most individuals, rare instances of minor irritation, rashes, or acne have been noted upon topical application, particularly in individuals with tree nut allergies. One case of anaphylaxis has been reported. It is important to note that if ingested, argan oil may enhance the effects of anticoagulant treatments, representing a contraindication for internal use.
