Mechanism of Action
Arctigenin exerts its brightening effects primarily by inhibiting melanin synthesis. It achieves this by repressing tyrosinase expression, downregulating cAMP levels, and promoting the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), which collectively reduce melanin content and tyrosinase activity. Beyond brightening, Arctigenin acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by blocking NF-κB activation, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, and inhibiting inflammatory mediators like COX-2 and iNOS. It also offers robust antioxidant protection, enhancing Vitamin E's efficacy and neutralizing oxidative stress via suppression of MAPK, PI3K/Akt, and STAT signaling pathways.
