As a highly hygroscopic humectant, it penetrates the stratum corneum to supplement the skin's endogenous amino acid pool. It chemically attracts and binds water molecules to epidermal cells, which reinforces the moisture barrier and enhances cellular elasticity by preventing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL).
