APHANOTHECE SACRUM EXOPOLYSACCHARIDES.

Valuable / ABSORBENT, EMULSION STABILISING, FILM FORMING, VISCOSITY CONTROLLING

A rare, megamolecular sulfated polysaccharide derived from the Japanese freshwater algae Aphanothece sacrum, commonly known as Sacran. This biomimetic polymer creates a high-density breathable mesh that delivers superior hydration and structural barrier reinforcement.

Skin protecting Humectant Anti-inflammatory Viscosity controlling Anti-pollution

Science

Sacran functions as a physical 'second skin' due to its massive molecular weight of approximately 29 million Daltons. Its high concentration of sulfate and carboxyl groups enables it to hold up to 6,000 times its weight in water—exceeding the capacity of hyaluronic acid by sixfold. Beyond moisture retention, it physically shields the epidermis from particulate pollution while suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines and allergic mediators.

Key findings

  1. 01 Significant reduction in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and barrier improvement in dry skin subjects at 0.1% concentration.
  2. 02 Suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6) and chemokines (MCP-1) in skin models at 0.05%.
  3. 03 Noticeable improvement in itching and sleep quality for atopic dermatitis patients after 4 weeks of topical 0.05% application.

Because Sacran is effective at exceptionally low concentrations (0.01%–0.1%), many brands include it at 'trace' amounts below 0.005% just for label claims. For clinical barrier repair and anti-inflammatory benefits, a minimum of 0.05% is recommended.
