ACRYLIC ACID/HYDROXYETHYLACRYLAMIDE COPOLYMER.

Valuable CAS - / ANTISTATIC, FILM FORMING, HAIR CONDITIONING, HAIR FIXING

ACRYLIC ACID/HYDROXYETHYLACRYLAMIDE COPOLYMER is a versatile synthetic polymer designed to optimize cosmetic formulations. It functions primarily as a film-forming and thickening agent, imparting a smooth tactile sensation to the skin and enhancing product water resistance. This ingredient also contributes to the overall stability and texture of skincare and haircare products.

Science

On the skin, ACRYLIC ACID/HYDROXYETHYLACRYLAMIDE COPOLYMER creates a subtle, flexible film that contributes to a smooth feel and forms a barrier, thereby increasing the formulation's water resistance. As a thickening agent, its polymeric structure increases the viscosity of liquid preparations, improving product texture and application experience. Additionally, it offers antistatic and hair conditioning benefits in hair formulations.

Stability

This copolymer exhibits pH-sensitive swelling, with optimal swelling observed under alkaline conditions, peaking at a pH of approximately 9.18. Formulations may necessitate neutralization, typically with agents like 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol, to ensure desired performance. It is important to acknowledge that this ingredient is non-biodegradable and classified as a microplastic, raising environmental considerations.

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used
Sensitization risk Unknown

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that acrylamide/acrylate copolymer ingredients, including this copolymer, are safe under current practices of use and concentration. Formulators must adhere to a strict limit, ensuring the acrylamide monomer content in cosmetic formulations does not exceed 5 ppm. The large molecular weight of these polymers generally precludes significant dermal absorption. They are largely insoluble and deemed unlikely to form nitrosamines or nitrosamides. However, at higher concentrations, acrylates copolymer may induce irritation. Related copolymers have been safely used at concentrations up to 7% in leave-on formulations. Ingredients within this group should not be incorporated into products with nitrosating systems, must maintain a minimum purity of 99%, and not exceed a nitrosamine content of 50 µg/kg, while being stored in nitrite-free containers.
