How to choose a skin barrier repair moisturiser
A barrier repair moisturiser’s job is to rebuild the lipid matrix that holds your skin together — not just to hydrate on the surface. The ingredients with the strongest clinical evidence for actual repair are ceramides, ectoin, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and panthenol (vitamin B5). Niacinamide and centella asiatica are useful secondary actives for calming inflammation during recovery.
The most overlooked factor is concentration. A product can list ceramides or ectoin on its label at levels too low to do anything meaningful. Look for brands that disclose their active percentages. The Mantle publishes every percentage: 2.5% triple ceramide complex, 1.5% ectoin, 2% Matrixyl Morphomics peptides, plus Swiss apple stem cells and fermented botanicals at a combined 8.5% total active load.
If you’re dealing with eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or over-exfoliated skin, prioritise fragrance-free, essential-oil-free formulations. Many “sensitive skin” products still contain fragrance, botanical extracts, or drying alcohols that will stall barrier recovery. Moumoujus formulations omit all three.
