Mechanism of Action
This oil functions as an emollient and skin conditioning agent by delivering a rich profile of (poly)unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, carotenoids, and free fatty acids to the skin, thereby softening and smoothing its surface. Furthermore, the essential oil derived from Torreya nucifera has been shown to combat various skin pathogens through antibacterial action and mitigate inflammation by reducing the secretion of key inflammatory mediators.

Key findings
- 01 Torreya Nucifera seed oil (TNSO), at an in vitro concentration of 0.75 μL/mL, effectively promoted the differentiation of preadipocytes into mature adipocytes. This was evidenced by the upregulation of adipogenic genes (adiponectin, FAS, FABP4) and an increase in intracellular triglyceride levels, alongside the activation of PPARγ and STAT3 pathways. Cytotoxicity studies in human keratinocyte HaCaT cells demonstrated high viability (over 80%) at concentrations up to 31.25 μl/ml, with negligible cytotoxicity observed at 15 μl/ml.
- 02 Torreya Nucifera essential oil (TEO), derived from the plant, exhibited potent antibacterial activities against common skin pathogens including Propionibacterium acnes, Propionibacterium granulosum, Malassezia furfur, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Candida albicans at concentrations ranging from 2.5-20.0 μL mL⁻¹. TEO also demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects by significantly reducing LPS-induced secretion of inflammatory cytokines and mediators such as interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, nitric oxide (NO), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in RAW 264.7 cells.

The Formula
Formulation
Stability
As a vegetable oil, it contains a significant proportion of (poly)unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, carotenoids, and free fatty acids. Studies on related Torreya grandis seed oil suggest good oxidative and thermal stability, indicating potential for a stable shelf-life in formulations.
Safety
Safety Profile
The CIR Expert Panel categorized Torreya Nucifera Seed Oil as having 'insufficient data' in 2011, though they indicated it would likely be deemed 'safe as used' upon submission of chemical composition data. Historically, it had 'No Reported Uses' in 2010 under the FDA's VCRP. EWG Skin Deep rates its concerns for cancer, allergies & immunotoxicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and use restrictions as 'LOW'.
