When exposed to water, strontium sulfide hydrolyzes, yielding hydrosulfides and hydroxides. The hydrosulfides initiate the breakdown of disulfide bonds within keratin, the primary protein composing hair. Concurrently, hydroxides contribute to alkalinity, inducing swelling and softening of the hair shaft, which enhances hydrosulfide penetration and leads to the rapid disintegration of the hair structure.
