SOLANUM PANICULATUM EXTRACT.

Questionable / HAIR CONDITIONING, SKIN CONDITIONING

Solanum Paniculatum Extract is a botanical active, rich in phenolic compounds and flavonoids, recognized for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential antiviral properties. It is explored for its ability to protect the skin from oxidative stress and modulate inflammatory pathways, positioning it for targeted skincare benefits.

Science

The extract functions by delivering a complex of active compounds including phenolic acids, flavonoids, vitamin E, and carotenoids. These phytochemicals exert antioxidant effects by inhibiting prooxidant enzymes, mitigating DNA damage and lipid peroxidation, and suppressing reactive oxygen species (ROS) signaling. Furthermore, it demonstrates anti-inflammatory action through the modulation of cytokine production, specifically reducing IL-6, and exhibits preliminary antiviral potential.

Solanum Paniculatum Extract has not been evaluated by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, SCCS, or FDA for cosmetic use. While an in vivo toxicological evaluation of the root extract showed no adverse effects on hematological, biochemical, anatomical, or histopathological parameters, in vitro studies reported cytotoxicity in cancer cell lines (MCF-7 at 30 μg/mL, MDA-MB-231 at 1.87 μg/mL) and an increase in pro-inflammatory IL-1β in HUVEC cells at 3.75 μg/mL. Cytotoxicity has also been indicated in bacterial strains and mice micronucleus tests with other extract forms.

Our Assessment

Questionable

While exhibiting in vitro antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties by decreasing IL-6, concerns arise from its reported cytotoxicity in certain cancer cell lines and an increase in pro-inflammatory IL-1β in normal endothelial cells at relatively low concentrations, alongside an unreviewed safety status.
