General toxicological data for hydrotropes, as reported by the OECD, suggest a low order of acute toxicity, with no evidence of skin sensitization, genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, or developmental/fertility effects in animal studies. However, aggregated GHS classifications from company reports indicate warnings for skin sensitization in 44.9% of reports and serious eye irritation in 96.7% of reports. While considered to have low acute toxicity when handled properly, prolonged or repeated exposure may lead to mild irritation of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Repeated skin contact may cause epidermal cracking, flaking, or drying, and there is some evidence suggesting it can cause inflammation of the skin in certain individuals.
