SODIUM SILICATE EXTRACT.

Questionable / SKIN CONDITIONING, SKIN PROTECTING

Sodium Silicate Extract is a versatile ingredient renowned for its temporary skin-tightening and film-forming properties, often likened to 'liquid glass'. It also supports long-term skin health by promoting collagen and elastin production, offering exfoliating benefits, and enhancing ingredient absorption.

Science

This compound exerts its effects through a multi-faceted approach. It creates a temporary film on the skin's surface, providing an immediate tightening sensation. Furthermore, it is reported to stimulate the endogenous synthesis of collagen and elastin, critical proteins for maintaining skin structure and elasticity. Its exfoliating action aids in revealing a clearer, brighter complexion. Sodium Silicate also acts as an absorption enhancer, facilitating the uptake of other beneficial actives. With inherent antiseptic and antibacterial qualities, it contributes to reducing blemishes. It functions as a pH modifier and stabilizer, assisting in balancing skin pH, minimizing pore appearance, and regulating sebum production while supporting the skin's natural protective flora.

Stability

Sodium silicates maintain stability in neutral and alkaline solutions. However, in acidic environments (below pH 9), silicate ions react to form silicic acids, which then decompose into an insoluble hydrated silicon dioxide gel. Stable solutions of monomeric and polymeric silicate ions exist above a pH of 11-12.

Synergies

  • Enhances the absorption of other active ingredients, vitamins, and nutrients.

Conflicts

  • Acids (causes precipitation and decomposition)
  • Alkaline earth ions
  • Heavy metal ions
  • Brine (causes coagulation)

Safety

CIR Status
Safe with restrictions
Max tested
Less than 40% (at molar ratios >3.2 to avoid irritation)%
Sensitization risk Moderate

The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety (CIR) concluded that sodium silicate and related silicate ingredients are safe in cosmetics when formulated to be non-irritating, specifically at concentrations below 40% with a molar ratio (SiO2/Na2O) greater than 3.2. Dermal and ocular irritation can vary from negligible to severe depending on the specific molar ratio and concentration. Formulations with molar ratios up to 1.6 and concentrations exceeding 50% may be corrosive, and those with molar ratios >1.6 can be irritating. Notably, a skin freshener containing 4% active Sodium Silicate (10% of a 40% aqueous solution) was found to be non-irritating. Sodium Metasilicate, a form of sodium silicate, is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for certain food applications by the FDA. Untreated soluble silicate solutions are typically alkaline (pH > 9) and may cause irritation or corrosivity; neutralization prior to discharge is recommended.
