SODIUM FERROCYANIDE.

Valuable CAS 13601-19-9 / ANTICAKING

Sodium ferrocyanide serves as a key anti-caking agent in cosmetic formulations, meticulously preventing the aggregation of solid particles. This action ensures consistent product texture and optimal performance, particularly in powders and particulate-rich products.

Anticaking

Science

This ingredient functions by adsorbing its ferrocyanide ions onto the crystal surfaces of other solid particles. This specific interaction inhibits further crystal growth and blocks agglomeration, thereby maintaining a free-flowing, uniformly dispersed state of ingredients within the formulation.

Transparency

Not commonly dusted

Sodium ferrocyanide is specifically used as an anti-caking agent to prevent other ingredients from clumping or 'dusting' negatively. It is not an ingredient that contributes to dusting issues in formulations; rather, it actively mitigates them.

Stability

Generally stable, however, it can decompose in the presence of strong acids or intense ultraviolet (UV) light, leading to the release of highly toxic hydrogen cyanide gas. It is also hygroscopic, losing its water of crystallization between 50-60°C.

Conflicts

  • Strong acids
  • Strong oxidizing agents
  • Intense sunlight/UV light exposure

Safety

CIR Status
Not reviewed
Sensitization risk Moderate

Sodium ferrocyanide is approved by the FDA as a food additive for its anti-caking properties. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has deemed ferrocyanides (E 535–538) safe at authorized food additive levels, establishing a group Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) of 0.03 mg/kg body weight per day, expressed as the ferrocyanide ion. Its inherent toxicity is low due to cyanide ligands being tightly bound to the iron atom, preventing ready release of free cyanide. However, decomposition under strong acidic conditions or intense UV light can generate highly toxic hydrogen cyanide gas. While in vivo studies suggest pure sodium and potassium ferrocyanide are not irritants or skin sensitizers, commercial grades may pose a dermal and respiratory sensitization risk, potentially due to nickel impurities. Some safety data sheets additionally indicate potential for skin and serious eye irritation.

Our Assessment

Valuable

Sodium ferrocyanide is a valuable formulation aid, effectively preventing particle clumping and maintaining product consistency, though careful consideration of its stability and potential for irritation from commercial grades is crucial for precise formulation.
