SILVER SULFATE.

Questionable CAS 10294-26-5 / ANTIMICROBIAL

Silver Sulfate is an inorganic silver compound recognized for its potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties within skincare formulations. It operates by releasing silver ions, targeting bacterial proliferation, and modulating inflammatory pathways.

Antimicrobial Anti-inflammatory Skin Conditioning

Science

Silver Sulfate primarily functions via the liberation of silver ions (Ag+), which bind to bacterial DNA, inhibiting replication and bacterial cell growth. In cosmetic applications, general silver compounds also exhibit anti-inflammatory effects by disrupting the VEGF pathway, reducing pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNF-alpha and IL-6, inhibiting nuclear factor-kB signaling, and suppressing prostaglandin and cyclooxygenase synthesis.

Stability

Silver Sulfate is stable but exhibits photosensitivity, darkening upon exposure to air or light. It requires storage in a tightly closed, light-resistant container in a cool, dry, and ventilated area. Its sparing solubility in water increases in more acidic solutions (lower pH).

Sensitization risk Moderate

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has deferred evaluation of elemental silver due to prior FDA assessment. The FDA lists Silver (CI 77820) as a color additive for nail polish up to 1%. However, the SCCS considers micron-sized particulate Silver unsafe in total concentrations above 0.3% in leave-on cosmetic products. While SkinSAFE lists Silver Sulfate as '100 Free' from common allergens, it can induce skin inflammation or exacerbate pre-existing dermatitis in certain individuals. Chronic exposure is associated with argyria, a permanent bluish-gray tissue discoloration.

Our Assessment

Questionable

While exhibiting clear antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory mechanisms, the absence of specific clinical efficacy data for skincare and notable safety concerns, including the risk of argyria and potential for contact inflammation, render Silver Sulfate a questionable ingredient for precision skincare formulations.
