The CIR Expert Panel has deemed PEGylated alkyl glycerides, including derivatives like PEG-75 shea butter glycerides, safe for use in cosmetics at current practices and concentrations. Polyethylene glycols (PEGs) and their derivatives are generally characterized by very good skin tolerance and are not typically sensitizing to normal, healthy skin. However, it is important to note that PEGs can be readily absorbed through damaged skin and have been associated with contact dermatitis and systemic toxicity in burn patients. While considered stable and safe by regulatory bodies, some concerns exist within the 'natural' cosmetics sector regarding potential residual Ethylene Oxide and 1,4 Dioxane from their synthetic production.
