RUBBER LATEX EXTRACT.

Questionable CAS - / SKIN CONDITIONING

Rubber Latex Extract, derived from the Hevea brasiliensis tree, offers potential benefits for skin health, including accelerating wound healing, balancing sebum production, and contributing to skin brightening by influencing pigmentation pathways. However, its significant association with natural rubber latex allergies, affecting 1-6% of the general population, presents a critical safety consideration for cosmetic formulation.

Science

This biocompatible polymer actively stimulates tissue repair through processes like enhancing vasculogenesis and recruiting cells for regeneration. It also acts as a stable matrix for controlled ingredient release and exhibits angiogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Specifically, certain rubber latex extracts achieve skin lightening by inhibiting Protease Activated Receptor-2 (PAR-2) and tyrosinase, key regulators of skin pigmentation. Within cosmetic products, it additionally functions as a film-forming and opacifying agent.

While specific concentrations (0.1% to 1%) have demonstrated biological efficacy in studies, the primary concern with Rubber Latex Extract is its high allergenic potential. Any presence, even at sub-therapeutic or 'dusted' levels, can trigger severe allergic reactions in the 1-6% of the population sensitive to natural rubber latex. Therefore, its inclusion at any concentration represents a significant red flag for this susceptible consumer group.

Stability

The colloidal stability of Natural Rubber Latex (NRL) can be significantly enhanced by elevating the pH, typically achieved through the addition of ammonia.

Conflicts

  • Individuals with diagnosed natural rubber latex allergy.
  • High concentrations of ammonia, if used for latex preservation and remaining as residue in the extract, can lead to cytotoxic and genotoxic effects.

Sensitization risk High

Natural rubber latex is a well-documented allergen, affecting approximately 1-6% of the general population, with sensitization capable of developing over time. Allergic reactions can range from localized skin irritation and rashes to severe respiratory distress and life-threatening anaphylactic shock. Between January 2015 and September 2017, the FDA received 30 reports of allergic reactions linked to cosmetic products containing natural rubber latex. Furthermore, natural rubber latex membranes preserved with ammonia have shown cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in cell cultures, as well as inducing necrosis and increased inflammatory cells in rabbit tissues. However, animal skin tests for a specific 'Hb extract' intended for skin whitening did not show adverse effects like irritation or sensitization under OECD test guidelines.

Our Assessment

Questionable

While research indicates Rubber Latex Extract possesses valuable properties for wound healing, skin brightening, and sebum control, the pervasive and potentially severe allergic reactions associated with natural rubber latex render this ingredient highly questionable for broad inclusion in precision skincare formulations.
