RICEBRANAMIDE DEA.

Optional / SURFACTANT - FOAM BOOSTING, VISCOSITY CONTROLLING

RICEBRANAMIDE DEA is a diethanolamide derived from rice bran, primarily serving as a surfactant and emulsifier in cosmetic formulations. It enhances product texture by boosting foam and increasing viscosity, ensuring stable and well-mixed emulsions.

Emulsifying Emulsion stabilising Foam boosting Surfactant Viscosity controlling

Science

This ingredient functions as a multifaceted formulation aid. As a surfactant, it effectively reduces surface tension, which aids in the even spreading of products and the generation of stable foam. It acts as an emulsifying agent, crucial for homogeneously blending immiscible oil and water phases, thereby stabilizing product formulations. Additionally, RICEBRANAMIDE DEA serves as a viscosity-enhancing agent, improving the body and texture of aqueous solutions, and in cleansing products, it assists in trapping oil-based impurities for more efficient rinsing.

Stability

While no specific optimal pH range for stability has been identified for RICEBRANAMIDE DEA, it is noted that formulations containing high concentrations (>64%) of related diethanolamides at an elevated pH (approximately 9.0-10.5) have been associated with instances of significant ocular irritation.

Conflicts

  • Nitrosating agents (due to potential formation of N-nitroso compounds).

Sensitization risk Unknown

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has concluded that diethanolamides, including RICEBRANAMIDE DEA, are safe for cosmetic use when formulated to be non-irritating and when the levels of free Diethanolamine (DEA) are maintained within safe limits. For leave-on products, the maximum use concentration is 40%, provided that free ethanolamine levels do not exceed 5%. For rinse-off applications, this ingredient is considered safe when formulated to be non-irritating. It is critical to avoid co-formulation with nitrosating agents, as this can lead to the formation of potentially harmful N-nitroso compounds. Although Diethanolamine (DEA) has been classified as 'possibly carcinogenic to humans' (Group 2B) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the CIR Panel determined that these findings from mouse studies do not indicate a human health risk from cosmetic product use due to the understood mode of action and limited skin penetration.

Our Assessment

Optional

RICEBRANAMIDE DEA is a valuable formulation excipient, enhancing product texture and stability as a surfactant and emulsifier, but requires careful formulation to adhere to safety restrictions, particularly regarding free DEA levels and co-formulation with nitrosating agents.
