Mechanism of Action
This ingredient functions as a powerful antioxidant, actively shielding keratinocytes from oxidative stressors and neutralizing free radicals, thereby preserving endogenous antioxidant levels and preventing UV-induced lipid peroxidation. It exhibits strong anti-inflammatory properties, effectively reducing inflammation triggered by irritants. Quercetin Caprylate may also mitigate skin collagen degradation by inhibiting Matrix Metalloproteinase (MMP) activity, which often increases during inflammatory responses to external aging factors. Furthermore, it enhances the proliferation and migration of dermal fibroblasts via the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, which is vital for efficient wound healing and accelerated collagen formation. It contributes to anti-aging effects by restoring cellular antioxidant levels, improving mitochondrial function, and downregulating cellular senescence in aged dermal fibroblasts. Notably, Quercetin Caprylate can also stabilize chemical UV filters, such as avobenzone and octinoxate, against degradation.

Stability
As a caprylate ester of the poorly water-soluble quercetin, this ingredient demonstrates improved oil solubility. While quercetin's solubility and dissolution are enhanced in acidic environments (e.g., pH 5.5 compared to 7.4), and its stability is optimal between pH 4 and 6, quercetin-loaded nanoemulsions have shown stability from pH 6.5 to 9.0, but exhibited instability and droplet aggregation at lower pH values (4.0-6.0). Quercetin has been found compatible with various pharmaceutical excipients over 4 weeks at 50°C.
Synergies
- Stabilizes chemical UV filters (e.g., avobenzone, octinoxate) against degradation.
Conflicts
- Zinc Oxide (physical sunscreens) - may cause a temporary tanning effect on the skin when co-formulated.
Safety
Safety Profile
Quercetin Caprylate has not undergone specific safety reviews by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS), or FDA for cosmetic use. However, EWG Skin Deep rates it as 'LOW' for potential concerns including cancer, allergies & immunotoxicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and use restrictions. Oral, dermal, and inhalation toxicity for Quercetin Caprylate are listed as 'Not determined' by The Good Scents Company.
