Mechanism of Action
Propyl benzoate acts as an antimicrobial preservative by penetrating microbial cell membranes. Under acidic conditions, it dissociates to lower the intracellular pH and inhibit critical respiratory enzymes, thereby preventing the proliferation of bacteria, yeast, and fungi. Additionally, it can temporarily modify the lipid composition of the stratum corneum, which may facilitate transdermal drug absorption in certain pharmaceutical applications.
