Mechanism of Action
As a polymer comprised of organic units linked by carbamate (urethane) bonds, POLYURETHANE-7 operates by depositing a cohesive, uniform film upon application. This film acts as a physical barrier, which can contribute to moisture retention, provide a smooth surface, and improve the durability of cosmetic products. In broader medical contexts, related polyurethane materials are recognized for their mechanical flexibility and potential to support a favorable environment for tissue repair.

Stability
POLYURETHANE-7 is a copolymer typically supplied as an aqueous emulsion or solution (Waterborne Polyurethane Dispersion - PUD). Its stability and viscosity can be pH-responsive; while some water-soluble polyurethanes show reduced viscosity between pH 5-7 (from an initial alkaline pH of 9-10), lowering the pH of waterborne polyurethanes with carboxylic groups can destabilize the dispersion. Polyether urethanes generally exhibit robust hydrolytic stability at neutral pH (e.g., pH 7.4 ± 0.5), in contrast to polyester polyurethanes which may be susceptible to hydrolysis in high humidity or water exposure.
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has deemed POLYURETHANE-7, along with 65 other polyurethane ingredients, safe for use in cosmetics under current practices and concentrations, provided formulations are non-sensitizing. The Panel confirmed no detectable residual isocyanate or monomer content. While specific use concentration for POLYURETHANE-7 was not provided to CIR, for other polyurethanes in the same assessment, a maximum of 7.5% was reported for leave-on skin preparations. General polyurethane resins also hold regulatory acceptance in various FDA food contact applications.
