POLYURETHANE-26 is susceptible to hydrolytic degradation, particularly when immersed in water at elevated temperatures, potentially leading to a water-soluble gel. pH also influences stability, with some types degrading under acidic conditions (pH 4.0–6.5) or swelling at pH 7.4. Formulators should minimize exposure to elevated temperatures in the presence of water. It may be supplied as an emulsion or solution, potentially containing various other chemicals.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded that POLYURETHANE-26 and 65 other polyurethane ingredients are safe for use within current practices and concentrations, provided they are formulated to be non-sensitizing. The panel determined there would be no detectable residual isocyanate or other monomers in these ingredients. While an industrial variant (Millathane® 26) complies with certain FDA food contact regulations, this does not directly extend to cosmetic-specific FDA approval.
