Mechanism of Action
This silicone-based UV-B filter operates by absorbing UVB radiation within the 280-320 nm range, peaking at 312 nm, and transforming this energy into heat, preventing its absorption by skin cells. Its unique polymeric structure creates a flexible, transparent, and water-resistant film on the skin's surface, which uniformly disperses the light-absorbing chromophores. Beyond its direct protective action, Polysilicone-15 also acts as a photostabilizer, enhancing the stability of the formulation itself and other co-formulated UV filters against UV-induced degradation.

Key findings
- 01 Approved as an effective UV-B filter in the EU and other regions, demonstrating absorption of UV-B radiation from approximately 280 to 320 nm, which prevents sunburn and photoaging.
- 02 Studies reported very low dermal absorption, measured at 2% after 16 hours, indicating minimal systemic exposure.

Stability
Exhibits robust stability across a pH range of 4.0–5.0 and at elevated temperatures, resisting decomposition. Its oil-soluble nature is advantageous for seamless incorporation into oil-based formulations, contributing to overall formula stability and preventing crystallization of other sunscreen ingredients. It is inherently photostable.
Synergies
- Enhances the photostability of other UV filters, such as avobenzone.
- Can synergistically boost SPF when paired with other sunscreens like Ensulizole.
Safety
Safety Profile
The European Commission's Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) concluded its use up to a maximum of 10% poses no health hazard, citing minimal dermal absorption (2%), absence of sensitization, irritation, photoallergenicity, and mutagenicity. Although not FDA-approved as an active sunscreen in the US, it is permitted up to 1% to protect product formulations from UV degradation. Generally considered safe with low irritation potential.
