POLYMETHACRYLAMIDE.

Valuable / FILM FORMING

POLYMETHACRYLAMIDE is a versatile synthetic polymer primarily used in skincare as a film-former and thickening agent. It creates a breathable barrier on the skin, significantly reducing moisture loss to boost hydration and offering a temporary tightening effect that can diminish the appearance of fine lines. Its smooth texture also contributes to formula aesthetics and provides a soothing feel.

Film-forming Thickening Hydrating Emulsifying Skin-tightening Soothing

Science

Polymethacrylamide functions on the skin by creating a thin, breathable film on its surface. This physical barrier actively prevents transepidermal water loss, thereby substantially enhancing skin hydration. Concurrently, this film imparts a temporary mechanical tightening effect, which can visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Beyond direct skin benefits, Polymethacrylamide serves as a crucial formulation aid, acting as an emulsifier and thickener to improve product texture, stability, and spreadability. Its inherently smooth tactile quality can also establish a comforting barrier, potentially calming redness and mitigating irritation.

Stability

Polymethacrylamide is readily soluble in water but generally insoluble in most organic solvents. It is crucial to note that the polymer can undergo partial hydrolysis under strong alkaline conditions and an imidization reaction in strongly acidic environments (pH ≤ 2.5), both of which can lead to reduced solubility and potential degradation. For polyacrylamide emulsions specifically, optimal stability is observed at pH values below 6, with pH 5.5 being particularly favorable.

Conflicts

  • Strong acids, especially at pH ≤ 2.5, which can induce imidization and reduce water solubility.
  • Strong alkaline conditions, which can cause partial hydrolysis of the polymer.
  • Formulations with residual acrylamide monomer exceeding 5 ppm.
  • For polyacrylamide emulsions: contamination by water during storage, freezing temperatures, drying out, and excessive shearing forces.
  • Acrylamide monomer (as an impurity) is incompatible with oxidizing agents, iron and iron salts, copper, brass, and free radical initiators.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel deemed Polymethacrylamide safe for cosmetic use, provided that the concentration of residual acrylamide monomer in the final formulation does not exceed 5 ppm. Current cosmetic uses have reported concentrations up to 3%. Human skin tolerance tests evaluating a 5% concentration of Polymethacrylamide demonstrated it to be well-tolerated and non-irritating.
