The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has evaluated dimethicone crosspolymer ingredients, including POLYDIMETHYLSILOXYETHYL DIMETHICONE/BIS-VINYLDIMETHICONE CROSSPOLYMER, and affirmed their safety for use in cosmetics. Its substantial molecular size is believed to limit significant skin penetration, thereby minimizing systemic absorption. The EU COSING database approves its use for viscosity control, skin conditioning, and opacifying in both leave-on and rinse-off products. A closely related ingredient, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, holds a very low hazard rating from EWG (1). While generally considered safe, a product mixture containing approximately 16% of Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer showed a moderate irritant response (PPI of 2.38) on rabbit skin, suggesting that the overall formulation context can influence irritation potential. However, a local lymph node assay found a similar lauryl derivative at 1.5%, 3%, and 7.5% w/v to be non-sensitizing.
