POLYCYCLOPENTADIENE.

Valuable CAS 68132-00-3 / 25568-84-7 / VISCOSITY CONTROLLING

Polycyclopentadiene is a synthetic polymer valued in cosmetic formulations for its ability to enhance product adhesion and durability on the skin, hair, and nails. It actively contributes to water and rub-resistance while also refining formulation aesthetics and stability, presenting a favorable safety profile.

Science

Functioning as a synthetic resin, Polycyclopentadiene, particularly in its hydrogenated variant, significantly improves the substantivity and adhesion of cosmetic products to various biological surfaces, including skin, lips, lashes, hair, and nails. This property imparts tenacity, directly contributing to enhanced water-resistance and rub-resistance. Furthermore, it modifies formulary consistency for improved aesthetic appeal, effectively suspends pigments in color cosmetics, and delivers a desirable glossy finish.

Stability

Hydrogenated Polycyclopentadiene (Solid) demonstrates robust thermal stability, withstanding heat during the mixing process. For optimal longevity, store at room temperature, protected from sunlight or direct heat, in a tightly closed container, ensuring a minimum shelf life of 2 years.

Safety

CIR Status
Not reviewed
Sensitization risk Low

Polycyclopentadiene and its hydrogenated form have not undergone a specific review by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. However, the CIR Panel generally deems similar large molecular weight polymers unlikely to be absorbed into the skin and safe for cosmetic use when formulated to be non-irritating. While its monomer, cyclopentadiene, has been associated with eye/mucous membrane irritation and contact dermatitis, the polymer itself has shown only slight skin and eye irritancy in rabbit studies and was non-toxic in acute oral, dermal, and inhalation assessments. The ingredient is not listed on EWG's Restricted or Unacceptable Lists, and SkinSAFE classifies it as 'Teen SAFE', 'Lip SAFE', 'Baby SAFE', 'Eyelid SAFE', and 'Irritant Free'. It is not prohibited by the FDA for use in cosmetics.
