However, the CIR Panel generally deems similar large molecular weight polymers unlikely to be absorbed into the skin and safe for cosmetic use when formulated to be non-irritating. While its monomer, cyclopentadiene, has been associated with eye/mucous membrane irritation and contact dermatitis, the polymer itself has shown only slight skin and eye irritancy in rabbit studies and was non-toxic in acute oral, dermal, and inhalation assessments. The ingredient is not listed on EWG's Restricted or Unacceptable Lists, and SkinSAFE classifies it as 'Teen SAFE', 'Lip SAFE', 'Baby SAFE', 'Eyelid SAFE', and 'Irritant Free'. It is not prohibited by the FDA for use in cosmetics.
