Mechanism of Action
This pre-neutralized cross-linked acrylic polymer functions by efficiently gelling the water phase within cosmetic formulations, enabling it to thicken emulsions and suspend oil droplets or solid particles. On the skin, it forms a fine, protective film that contributes to moisture retention and optimizes the spreadability of other active ingredients. Its inherent oil-absorbing properties also help to control excess sebum and impart a desirable matte finish, making it beneficial for a range of skin concerns. The polymer's robust structure further stabilizes formulations, protecting sensitive active ingredients and extending product shelf life by creating a barrier against environmental factors like air, heat, and light.

Key findings
- 01 Demonstrated non-irritating properties in a dermal irritation study conducted in rabbits.
- 02 Proven non-sensitizing in a Human Repeated-Insult Patch Test (HRIPT).
- 03 Predicted to be a non-ocular irritant in an in vitro HET-CAM test.

Stability
Exhibits robust resistance to electrolytes, tolerating up to 10% salts across its broad pH range of 2 to 8. It is supplied in a pre-neutralized form, which streamlines formulation processes. While stable across its optimal pH range, peak viscosity performance is typically observed between pH 6 and 8. It is highly versatile, suitable for integration into both hot and cold process formulations.

Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel considers acrylates copolymers, including Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, safe for use in cosmetics when formulated to be non-irritating. While a human repeated-insult patch test at ~5% indicated no sensitization, and an in vitro test at 2% predicted non-ocular irritation, an in vivo rabbit study reported slight eye irritation at an unspecified concentration, with effects resolving fully within 6 to 7 days. It holds regulatory approval and is not restricted from use within the European Union.
