As a cross-linked polyacrylate, POLYACRYLATE-9 functions by forming a protective, non-occlusive film on the skin, which contributes to an improved sensorial experience and potentially prolongs product efficacy. Its polymeric structure also enables it to absorb up to 1000 times its mass in water, effectively increasing the viscosity of aqueous formulations and stabilizing emulsion systems by preventing phase separation.

This ingredient demonstrates robust stability across a pH range of 4.5 to 8.0, with potential instability observed beyond pH 9. It exhibits high resistance to alkaline conditions and intense heat up to 300°C without decomposition. For water-in-oil emulsions, its stability can be further enhanced by incorporating water-soluble thiosulfates, thiourea, nitrite, or thiocyanates.

The critical safety parameter is the concentration of residual acrylic acid, an impurity from the manufacturing process, which has the potential to cause irritation if present above 300 ppm. Therefore, formulations utilizing POLYACRYLATE-9 must ensure stringent control of residual monomer levels to maintain a non-irritating profile. It is also recognized by the FDA as an indirect food additive under 21 CFR 177.1211.
