POLYACRYLATE-19.

Valuable CAS - / FILM FORMING

POLYACRYLATE-19 is a precision polymer engineered to enhance skin hydration and product aesthetics. Functioning as a superabsorbent, it forms a protective, non-occlusive layer on the skin's surface, effectively minimizing water loss. Beyond its hydrating properties, it is a multi-functional excipient crucial for optimizing formulation texture and stability.

Science

This ingredient operates as a superabsorbent polymer, capable of absorbing and retaining an impressive 100 to 1000 times its mass in water. Due to its large molecular size, POLYACRYLATE-19 does not penetrate the stratum corneum, instead remaining on the skin's surface. Here, it establishes a gel-like film that functions as a protective barrier, substantially reducing transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and thereby preserving the skin's inherent moisture equilibrium. Furthermore, its polymer structure enables it to act as a thickening agent, texture enhancer, and emulsion stabilizer, imparting a smooth and refined feel to skincare products. It can also facilitate the sustained and consistent delivery of active ingredients to the skin through a controlled-release mechanism.

Stability

POLYACRYLATE-19, like other polyacrylates, dissolves in water to form a highly viscous, transparent liquid. It demonstrates high resistance to alkaline conditions, where viscosity may even increase slightly. However, its viscosity can be significantly reduced by the presence of acids and certain metal ions. It exhibits robust stability against heat treatment up to 300°C, neutral salts, and organic acids, with minimal impact on its viscosity.

Synergies

  • active ingredients (for controlled release)

Conflicts

  • acids (can decrease viscosity)
  • metal ions (can decrease viscosity)

Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has deemed closely related polyacrylate polymers, such as Sodium Polyacrylate, safe for cosmetic use at typical concentrations up to 3%. Undiluted Sodium Polyacrylate did not induce irritation or sensitization in human subjects. However, it is critical that manufacturing processes ensure residual acrylic acid levels remain below 300 parts per million (PPM), as concentrations exceeding this threshold could potentially lead to dermal irritation.
