The Expert Panel for Fragrance Safety has affirmed piperonyl acetate's safety at current use levels. It is not anticipated to be photoirritating, photoallergenic, or genotoxic. While an older database (NTP, 1992) suggested it as an irritant, more recent RIFM assessments indicate no skin sensitization concern at current concentrations. The NOAEL for repeated dose and reproductive toxicity is established at 300 mg/kg/day, based on its metabolites. Cosmetic products are FDA-regulated, although pre-market approval for ingredients (excluding color additives) is not required.
