The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has not issued a specific report for Perlite; however, it has reviewed naturally-sourced silicate ingredients, noting insufficient data to determine safety for products with incidental inhalation potential. The SCCS has not directly evaluated Perlite but has opined on aluminum compounds, which are constituents of perlite. The FDA lists expanded perlite as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for specific food processing uses. Perlite is not categorized as a carcinogen.
