Mechanism of Action
As a cationic polymer, PEI-1500 leverages its abundant amine groups to generate a positive charge, facilitating robust electrostatic interactions with negatively charged surfaces and proteins on the skin. This mechanism underpins its film-forming and conditioning capabilities, enhancing skin's tactile qualities and protective barrier. Its distinct blend of polar (amino) and hydrophobic (vinyl) groups enables strong adhesion, effective neutralization and adsorption of anionic substances, and chelation of heavy metal ions. Furthermore, PEI-1500 contributes to deodorization by neutralizing aldehyde compounds and acid gases, and exerts antibacterial effects through disruption of microbial membranes. Research on modified PEI has also indicated potential anti-inflammatory and reactive oxygen species-scavenging actions.

Specifically, 0.8 kDa branched PEI and 2.5 kDa linear PEI are noted for their balanced efficacy and safety.

PEI-1500 lacks a specific Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) safety assessment. The FDA has approved Polyethyleneimine for certain biomedical and food contact applications. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized a similar molecular weight PEI (1,300 daltons) as a low-risk polymer, noting its limited absorption through intact human skin. However, direct handling of the raw Polyethyleneimine material is associated with a risk of severe skin and eye irritation.
