PEI-1500.

Insufficient Data CAS 9002-98-6 / VISCOSITY CONTROLLING

PEI-1500 is a sophisticated cationic polymer characterized by its 1500 Dalton molecular weight. It's engineered to form protective films and condition the skin, while also exhibiting antimicrobial efficacy against prevalent bacteria and neutralizing various odor compounds.

Film-forming Conditioning Antibacterial Deodorizing Adhesion Chelating

Science

As a cationic polymer, PEI-1500 leverages its abundant amine groups to generate a positive charge, facilitating robust electrostatic interactions with negatively charged surfaces and proteins on the skin. This mechanism underpins its film-forming and conditioning capabilities, enhancing skin's tactile qualities and protective barrier. Its distinct blend of polar (amino) and hydrophobic (vinyl) groups enables strong adhesion, effective neutralization and adsorption of anionic substances, and chelation of heavy metal ions. Furthermore, PEI-1500 contributes to deodorization by neutralizing aldehyde compounds and acid gases, and exerts antibacterial effects through disruption of microbial membranes. Research on modified PEI has also indicated potential anti-inflammatory and reactive oxygen species-scavenging actions.

Key findings

  1. 01 Studies on low molecular weight Polyethyleneimines (0.8-5 kDa), including structures similar to PEI-1500 (1.5 kDa), report high biocompatibility and potent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in dermal applications. Specifically, 0.8 kDa branched PEI and 2.5 kDa linear PEI are noted for their balanced efficacy and safety.
  2. 02 A biosafe concentration of 1 μg/mL for unmodified PEI was identified with 75% cell viability in cell culture. Modified, betainized PEI demonstrated excellent biocompatibility at concentrations up to 1000 μg/mL, maintaining over 85% cell viability.

Sensitization risk Unknown

PEI-1500 lacks a specific Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) safety assessment. The FDA has approved Polyethyleneimine for certain biomedical and food contact applications. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized a similar molecular weight PEI (1,300 daltons) as a low-risk polymer, noting its limited absorption through intact human skin. However, direct handling of the raw Polyethyleneimine material is associated with a risk of severe skin and eye irritation.
