PEG-3 BUTYLENE GLYCOL LAURATE.

Valuable / SKIN CONDITIONING - EMOLLIENT, SURFACTANT - EMULSIFYING

PEG-3 Butylene Glycol Laurate is a versatile ester functioning as both a skin conditioning agent and an emulsifier, enhancing skin hydration and stabilizing product formulations. It effectively softens and smooths the skin while facilitating the uniform blending of oil and water phases. Additionally, its polyoxyethylene glycol (PEG) structure endows it with humectant properties, attracting and retaining moisture.

Science

This ingredient operates through a dual mechanism on the skin. As an emollient, it lubricates the skin's surface, promoting softness and smoothness, reinforcing the skin barrier with exogenous lipids, and diminishing transepidermal water loss to improve hydration levels. Simultaneously, as a surfactant and emulsifier, it plays a critical role in forming and stabilizing emulsions by significantly reducing the surface tension between immiscible liquids such as oil and water, thereby ensuring a homogenous product. This emulsifying action also assists in cleansing by enabling water to effectively mix with and remove oily impurities and dirt. Furthermore, as a PEG derivative, it exhibits humectant capabilities, drawing and retaining moisture within the stratum corneum.

Stability

PEG-3 Butylene Glycol Laurate demonstrates stability in aqueous environments without significant reactivity. However, it is incompatible with strong acids and strong oxidizers, which can lead to degradation or undesirable chemical interactions. While a precise optimal pH range for its stability has not been identified, it is anticipated to maintain integrity under neutral to mildly acidic or alkaline conditions.

25%
Sensitization risk Moderate

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has deemed PEG-3 Butylene Glycol Laurate safe for use in cosmetics at concentrations up to 25%. However, its application must be avoided on damaged or compromised skin, as there is evidence of sensitization and nephrotoxicity observed in burn patients treated with PEG-based preparations. As an ethoxylated ingredient, there is a potential for trace impurities, specifically 1,4-dioxane and unreacted ethylene oxide; rigorous purification procedures are therefore essential during manufacturing to ensure product safety. The FDA has also approved related PEG Dilaurate ingredients for indirect food additive uses.
