PEG-220.

Valuable CAS 25322-68-3 / BINDING, HUMECTANT, SOLVENT

PEG-220 is a high molecular weight polyethylene glycol polymer that acts as a powerful humectant, drawing and retaining moisture within the skin for enhanced hydration. Beyond its primary moisturizing benefits, it serves as a versatile excipient, contributing to formulation stability and texture.

Science

As a humectant, PEG-220 forms hydrogen bonds with water molecules, effectively binding moisture to the skin to provide gradual, long-term hydration. It also contributes to barrier function by forming a superficial film that minimizes transepidermal water loss. Within cosmetic formulations, PEG-220 exhibits multifaceted roles, functioning as a solvent for other ingredients, a binder, a carrier for active compounds, a dispersing agent, a viscosifier to adjust product consistency, an emulsifier, a cleansing agent, a thickener, and an antistatic agent.

Stability

PEG-220, also identified as PEG 10000, maintains stability for a minimum of two years. When stored in original sealed containers in a cool, dry place shielded from direct sunlight, it is stable for 6 months. Optimal long-term storage temperatures range from 10°C to 25°C, with a maximum of 30°C. Brief periods at higher temperatures are permissible, provided they remain below its solidification point of 55-62°C.

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used
Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has determined PEG-220, alongside other PEGs across a broad molecular weight spectrum, to be safe for use in cosmetic products under current conditions. High molecular weight PEGs like PEG-220 (average molecular weight ~10,000) are not absorbed through intact skin. It is recognized as minimally irritating and non-sensitizing to human skin. The prior caution regarding its use on damaged skin was rescinded in 2010. Manufacturers are advised to rigorously control impurities such as ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. The FDA generally regards PEGs as safe (GRAS) for certain applications, including as food additives, and lists them in its Database for Inactive Ingredients.
