PABA functions primarily as a UVB absorber, effectively intercepting radiation between 290 and 320 nm. Its chemical architecture, characterized by para-positioned amino and carboxyl groups, facilitates electron delocalization, enabling electrons to transition to a higher energy state upon light absorption. Additionally, PABA possesses local anesthetic capabilities by modulating sodium influx into nerve cells, thereby inhibiting neural conduction within sensory nerves and reducing pain signal transmission.

  1. 01 Oral administration of 12g PABA daily was observed to significantly slow the progression of Peyronie's disease, though it did not reduce preexisting plaque. The efficacy for other conditions like scleroderma, male infertility, and vitiligo relies on older studies lacking rigorous controls and strong scientific backing.
  2. 02 PABA-terminated dendrimers, at concentrations above 20 μM, demonstrated enhanced scavenging of radicals and radical cations in vitro. They fully suppressed human melanoma cell line proliferation at 100 μM and reduced it between 20–100 μM. While generating a small amount of reactive oxygen species at 20 μM, human fibroblast and mouse cerebellar granule cells remained intact.
