P-Vinylphenol exhibits good stability but is sensitive to light and ozone, which can induce oxidation, decomposition, and polymerization. It is also hygroscopic. Optimal storage requires an inert gas atmosphere (nitrogen or argon) at a temperature range of 2-8°C. Predicted water solubility is approximately 8.4 g/L.

P-Vinylphenol presents severe safety hazards. It is classified as toxic if swallowed, harmful if swallowed, fatal in contact with skin, and toxic in contact with skin. It causes severe skin burns and eye damage, induces skin irritation, and may provoke an allergic skin reaction. Furthermore, it is fatal if inhaled, may cause allergy or asthma symptoms, or breathing difficulties if inhaled. It is suspected of causing genetic defects and damaging fertility or the unborn child. Prolonged or repeated exposure can lead to organ damage. The FDA no longer permits its use as a synthetic flavoring substance.
