MIPA-LAURETH SULFATE.

Valuable CAS 83016-76-6 / 9062-04-8 / CLEANSING, SURFACTANT - CLEANSING

MIPA-Laureth Sulfate is an anionic surfactant widely used for its robust cleansing and emulsifying capabilities. It effectively reduces surface tension, enabling efficient removal of dirt, oils, and impurities from the skin and hair.

Science

As an anionic surfactant, MIPA-Laureth Sulfate functions by lowering the surface tension between different ingredients and the skin or hair. This action allows it to encapsulate and emulsify hydrophobic substances like oils and dirt, making them easily rinsable with water. It also contributes to foam generation, acts as a solubilizer, and helps stabilize foam and thicken product formulations.

Stability

This ingredient exhibits optimal stability within a pH range of 5.5 to 7.5. It is known to produce excellent lathering action when co-formulated with propylene glycol and is also suitable for use in waterless formulas. Formulators must diligently minimize the potential for nitrosamine formation by selecting raw materials with low nitrosation potential and by consistently monitoring nitrosamine levels in both raw ingredients and finished products.

Safety

CIR Status
Safe as used
Sensitization risk Low

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has assessed MIPA-Laureth Sulfate as safe for use in cosmetic formulations, consistent with their findings for related sulfated ethoxylated alcohols which showed no adverse toxicological responses. The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) also approves its use under the EC Cosmetics Regulation, potentially with restrictions on purity, maximum concentration, or specific product categories. While generally considered minimally allergenic and comedogenic, MIPA-Laureth Sulfate can cause eye irritation and may lead to skin dryness or irritation, particularly at high concentrations or when applied to damaged or sensitive skin. Due to its ethoxylated nature, there is a potential for contamination with Ethylene Oxide and 1,4-Dioxane, necessitating stringent quality control. It is not recommended for oral hygiene products or application around the eye and mouth areas.
