MIBK.

Avoid CAS 108-10-1 / DENATURANT, PERFUMING, SOLVENT

MIBK, or Methyl Isobutyl Ketone, is an aliphatic ketone primarily recognized for its solvent and alcohol denaturant properties in cosmetic formulations. While effective in these roles, its direct or prolonged contact with skin can induce drying and flaking, making it unsuitable for enhancing skin health.

Solvent Denaturant Perfuming Agent

Science

Functioning as an aliphatic ketone, MIBK efficiently dissolves other substances and serves to denature alcohol in various cosmetic products. On the skin, its action can disrupt the natural moisture balance, leading to dehydration and subsequent flaking with repeated or extended exposure.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded MIBK is safe when used in nail polish removers and as an alcohol denaturant, a decision reaffirmed in March 2024. The highest reported concentration of use is 21% in nail correction pens. The FDA includes MIBK on its list of direct and indirect food additives for flavoring. Studies in rats showed reduced hair follicle mitotic activity and increased epidermal thickness at dermal applications of 300-600 mg/kg, and ocular irritation was noted in humans exposed to 200 ppm in air.

Our Assessment

Avoid

Due to its high irritancy, potential for skin drying and flaking, and primary functions as a solvent and denaturant without direct skin benefits, MIBK is not recommended for precision skincare formulations.
