MAGNESIUM PEROXIDE.

Avoid CAS 1335-26-8 / 14452-57-4 / OXIDISING

Magnesium Peroxide is an inorganic compound valued for its oxidizing properties, releasing oxygen and hydrogen peroxide upon contact with water. This action facilitates deep cleansing and exfoliation by breaking down impurities and aiding in the removal of dead skin cells.

Oxidizing Antiacne Deep Cleansing Exfoliating

Science

As an oxidizing agent, Magnesium Peroxide (MgO2) reacts with water to release oxygen (O2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), along with magnesium ions (Mg2+). The released oxygen and hydrogen peroxide drive oxidation reactions, which are instrumental in cosmetic formulations for purifying the skin, breaking down cellular debris, and promoting a gentle exfoliating effect. Magnesium ions contribute to tissue regeneration and possess anti-inflammatory qualities, while oxygen itself can support wound healing through enhanced cellular metabolism.

Stability

Magnesium peroxide remains stable below 150˚C but is highly sensitive to moisture, gradually decomposing in water to yield oxygen and magnesium hydroxide. While a 1% suspension typically exhibits a pH between 9.5 and 11.5, its decomposition and subsequent hydrogen peroxide release are more efficient in acidic environments and diminished under alkaline conditions. Unstable peroxosolvate forms can decompose even at 20°C in a dry atmosphere.

Sensitization risk High

Despite being generally recognized as safe for topical cosmetic use, Magnesium Peroxide is classified as an irritant. It can induce adverse reactions such as skin irritation, redness, dryness, and allergic responses. Direct contact may cause redness, itching, swelling, and has the potential to burn the skin and eyes. Inhalation exposure can irritate the respiratory system, with prolonged exposure posing a risk of lung damage. Due to these potential risks, a patch test is strongly advised prior to widespread application. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) assigns a 'HIGH' rating for its use restrictions.

Our Assessment

Avoid

While offering potential benefits for deep cleansing and exfoliation through its oxidizing action, Magnesium Peroxide carries a high risk of skin irritation, including burns, and significant formulation challenges, making its use questionable for precision skincare formulations.
