LAURYL SULTAINE.

Valuable CAS 14933-08-5 / ANTISTATIC, CLEANSING, HAIR CONDITIONING, SKIN CONDITIONING, SURFACTANT - CLEANSING, SURFACTANT - FOAM BOOSTING, VISCOSITY CONTROLLING

Lauryl Sultaine is a mild amphoteric surfactant frequently used in rinse-off formulations. It effectively reduces surface tension to gently cleanse skin and hair, facilitating the removal of oil and dirt without inducing dryness or irritation. Beyond its cleansing capabilities, it significantly enhances foam and provides conditioning benefits, contributing to skin hydration and softness.

Science

As a mild amphoteric surfactant, Lauryl Sultaine operates by lowering the surface tension between the skin and impurities such as oils and dirt. This action allows for the effective emulsification and subsequent removal of these substances during rinsing. It robustly boosts foam, exhibits strong detergency, and offers conditioning properties for both skin and hair, promoting a smooth feel. Furthermore, it aids in maintaining skin hydration, provides antistatic benefits, and demonstrates resistance to hard water.

Sensitization risk Low

The CIR Expert Panel has concluded that alkyl sultaines, including Lauryl Sultaine and Lauryl Hydroxysultaine, are safe for use in cosmetics under current practices and concentrations. The maximum reported use concentration is up to 5% in rinse-off products. Human Repeated Insult Patch Tests (HRIPTs) conducted with Lauryl Hydroxysultaine at 12% solution and 4% solids did not induce dermal irritation or sensitization. However, Lauryl Hydroxysultaine at higher concentrations (28% to 32%) was noted as a slight dermal irritant in rabbits. For Lauryl Sultaine specifically, in vitro assays predicted ocular irritation at 10% and 100% concentrations, and a 10% concentration was a moderate ocular irritant in rabbit eyes. The EPA classifies Lauryl Hydroxysultaine as a 'Safer Chemical' (green circle - low concern).
