Mechanism of Action
Lactoferrin operates through multiple pathways to improve skin health. It acts as a potent antimicrobial by chelating iron, thereby inhibiting the growth of acne-causing bacteria like Cutibacterium acnes. Its significant anti-inflammatory properties stem from reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1α, TSLP, IL-6, and TNF-α, which calms redness and swelling. Lactoferrin also regulates excessive sebum production to prevent clogged pores. It fortifies the skin barrier by improving Transepidermal Electrical Resistance (TEER) and upregulating key proteins and genes like AQP3, Filaggrin, Involucrin, and Claudin-1. Furthermore, it enhances skin hydration and elasticity by increasing hyaluronic acid synthesis (via HAS1 expression) and stimulating fibroblasts to boost collagen and elastin production. As an antioxidant, it neutralizes free radicals, mitigating oxidative stress for anti-aging effects. It can also improve skin tone by addressing inflammation-induced hyperpigmentation and supports wound healing and bruise reduction by binding released iron.
