Mechanism of Action
This complex acts as a humectant, drawing and retaining moisture to maintain optimal skin hydration. It actively supports a balanced and healthy skin microbiome by fostering beneficial bacteria and reinforcing the skin's natural defenses. The ingredient fortifies the skin barrier, mitigating transepidermal water loss and improving overall hydration. Its calming properties help to alleviate inflammation, irritation, and redness. Furthermore, it exhibits antimicrobial effects, creating an environment unfavorable to harmful skin microorganisms and formulation contaminants. Blueberry extract contributes antioxidant protection. The fermented components promote accelerated cell renewal and natural skin regeneration, contributing to anti-aging effects. Specifically, Lactobacillus ferment derivatives can inhibit tyrosinase activity, leading to reduced hyperpigmentation, more even skin tone, and increased luminosity, and may also play a role in DNA repair. Its antimicrobial and anti-seborrheic actions make it effective in rebalancing the microbiome and normalizing oil production to defend against fungal and bacterial acne.
Research
Clinical Evidence
Medium confidenceBenefits are observed across a range, with specific targeted effects demonstrated from 1% for reducing skin sensitivity, and 5% for anti-acne effects and a 47% reduction in redness. Leuconostoc Ferment Filtrate is recommended at 2-4% for antimicrobial properties.
Key findings
- 01 An in-vivo study with 5 participants demonstrated a 47% reduction in redness at 5% concentration of Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate Filtrate.
- 02 Lactobacillus ferment at 5% concentration has been identified as necessary for anti-acne efficacy.
- 03 Reduction in skin sensitivity was observed with Lactobacillus ferment at a 1% concentration.
- 04 A postbiotic complex featuring Lactobacillus ferment alleviated itching, prickling, tightness, dandruff, and burning in 30 female volunteers with sensitive scalp syndrome.
- 05 Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus ferment lysate was shown to alleviate redness and drying induced by SLS.
- 06 Lactobacillus extract filtrate encourages beneficial skin bacteria, supports natural skin barrier function, and protects against roughness and dryness.
- 07 Metabolites from Lactobacillus ferment can inhibit tyrosinase, contributing to the reduction of hyperpigmentation and overall skin brightening.

Dusting Analysis
As a ferment filtrate, this ingredient is an active postbiotic complex and is typically incorporated at efficacious concentrations, not merely 'dusted' into formulations.
The Formula
Formulation
Stability
Lactobacillus Ferment components are optimally stable within a pH range of 4.0-5.0. Leuconostoc Ferment Extract (Filtrate) can tolerate a broader pH range of 3.0-8.0. For optimal stability and integration, Leuconostoc Ferment Extract should be incorporated during the cooling phase (below 60°C / 140°F) and prior to the addition of thickeners.
Conflicts
- Highly anionic ingredients, including certain thickeners (for Leuconostoc Ferment Extract).
Safety
Safety Profile
The CIR Expert Panel concluded that Lactobacillus Ferment and related filtrates are safe for cosmetic use, with highest reported concentrations up to 5.6% in face and neck products. While generally non-irritating at 100% in EpiOcular assays, formulators are advised that postbiotics from Lactobacillus bacteria are tyrosinase-inhibitors and may potentially cause skin depigmentation if not used carefully. There is a reported risk of allergic reaction for sensitive skin, recommending a patch test.
