HYDROLYZED UMBILICAL EXTRACT.

Avoid / SKIN CONDITIONING

Hydrolyzed Umbilical Extract is an ingredient derived from umbilical tissue, rich in amino acids, peptides, and proteins. It primarily functions as a skin conditioning agent, aiming to enhance hydration and maintain skin health through its moisture-retaining properties.

Humectant Skin conditioning Moisturizing Nourishing

Science

This ingredient operates by delivering a complex of amino acids, peptides, and proteins, which act as humectants to attract and bind moisture to the skin's surface. This action improves surface hydration and elasticity, potentially reducing trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) by forming a protective film. Additionally, the presence of growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) may contribute to nourishing and regenerating effects on the skin, and could potentially accelerate cell proliferation in hair follicles.

Stability

To maintain stability, it is recommended to dissolve Hydrolyzed Umbilical Extract in water and shield it from temperatures exceeding 40°C. If the formulation process involves heating, the extract should be incorporated as a final step. Adequate preservation is crucial for product integrity.

Safety

CIR Status
Insufficient data
Sensitization risk Unknown

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel concluded in 2002 (reaffirmed 2010) that there is insufficient data to support the safety of umbilical extracts in cosmetics. Critical data gaps identified include skin sensitization at typical use concentrations, gross and histopathological findings from repeated exposures, dermal reproductive and developmental toxicity, photosensitization, and genotoxicity. The CIR also stipulated that these ingredients must not exhibit metabolic/endocrine activity and must be free of detectable pathogenic viruses or infectious agents. Human-derived ingredients are prohibited in the European Union (EU) cosmetics directive due to concerns about the transmission of human spongiform encephalopathies and viral diseases. While Japan permits unrestricted use in some products, significant regulatory and health concerns remain.

Our Assessment

Avoid

Due to insufficient safety data, critical data gaps identified by the CIR, and its prohibition in the European Union over serious health transmission concerns, Hydrolyzed Umbilical Extract is not recommended for use in cosmetic formulations.
