Mechanism of Action
Operating at a cellular level, Hydrolyzed Punica Granatum Mesocarp Extract delivers a complex blend of polyphenols, ellagic acid, punicalagins, and Vitamin C, acting as powerful scavengers against free radicals to prevent oxidative damage. Its anti-inflammatory action helps calm and reduce skin irritation across various conditions. The extract supports dermal structural integrity by stimulating collagen synthesis, which improves elasticity and reduces the appearance of fine lines. Furthermore, its natural humectant properties contribute to enhanced skin hydration. Ellagic acid selectively inhibits tyrosinase activity by chelating copper, thereby reducing melanin production for a brighter, more uniform complexion. Specific hydrolysable tannins may also assist in moderating sebum secretion, while polyphenols can offer a degree of protection against UV-induced damage by inhibiting NF-kappa B pathways.

Stability
Punica Granatum Extract typically exhibits an acidic pH of 3.0-4.0. Some pericarp extracts may present solubilization challenges, often requiring specific cosmetic solvents like an 80:20 v/v Gly:H2O mixture for stability over three months at 5°C. Alcoholic extracts show solubility in various aqueous solutions (e.g., 0.1 N HCl, 0.1 N NaOH, 0.9% NaCl, phosphate buffers pH 4, 7 & 10) and some organic solvents like 95% ethanol.

Safety Profile
The CIR Expert Panel concluded *Punica granatum*-derived ingredients, including those containing mesocarp, are safe under current cosmetic uses and concentrations. An in vitro human epidermal model predicted non-irritation for a tradename mixture containing 10% Punica Granatum Pericarp Extract. US FDA generally recognizes *Punica granatum Linnaeus* extracts as safe (GRAS) for food applications. Human sensitization tests for 0.1% Punica Granatum Fruit Extract and 0.5% solids Punica Granatum Pericarp Extract were negative.
