Science
Mechanism of Action
Functions predominantly as a propellant by creating pressure within aerosol containers, facilitating product expulsion. As a cryogen, its mechanism involves rapid evaporative cooling upon contact with the skin surface, specifically employed to mitigate thermal injury during procedures such as laser treatments.

Stability
Exhibiting general stability, tests indicate long-term stability even when exposed to temperatures up to 175°C for 14 days in the presence of metals and refrigeration lubricants.
Conflicts
- Active metals
- Strong oxidizing agents
- Freshly abraded aluminum surfaces (potential exothermic reaction)
Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has not evaluated Hydrofluorocarbon 134A for cosmetic use. Classified by EWG as a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) and a per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), it raises significant concerns regarding potential for cancer, allergies, immunotoxicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption, persistence, bioaccumulation, and non-reproductive organ system toxicity. While possessing very low acute toxicity, high-concentration inhalation can induce cardiac arrhythmia, unconsciousness, or be fatal. Direct liquid contact may result in frostbite. It is, however, approved by the FDA as a propellant for specific medical applications, such as metered-dose inhalers.

Verdict
Despite its utility as a propellant and medical cryogen, the classification as a PFAS with broad high safety concerns from EWG and absence of CIR review render this ingredient unsuitable for Moumoujus skincare formulations.
