While recognized as GRAS by FEMA for flavor use, IFRA standards mandate strict maximum usage levels in cosmetics due to potential dermal sensitization and systemic toxicity. For facial moisturizers and similar leave-on products, the maximum allowed concentration is 0.04%. Higher concentrations (91-100%) are classified under GHS for skin irritation, allergic skin reaction, serious eye irritation, and suspected reproductive harm. However, a 2% solution has not shown irritation or sensitization in human experience.
