DECANAL.

Questionable CAS 112-31-2 / FRAGRANCE

Decanal is a naturally occurring aldehyde with demonstrated in vitro potential to combat photoaging by stimulating collagen and hyaluronic acid production in human dermal fibroblasts. Primarily utilized for its fragrant and masking properties, it also functions as an antifungal agent. However, its classification as a skin and eye irritant and a human allergen warrants significant caution for topical application.

Fragrance Masking Antifungal Emollient Anti-photoaging (in vitro)

Science

On a cellular level, Decanal has been shown to protect against UVB-induced photoaging. It achieves this by dose-dependently promoting collagen synthesis, increasing intracellular cAMP levels, and enhancing hyaluronic acid levels and hyaluronic acid synthase mRNA expression. Concurrently, it decreases molecules in the MAPK/AP-1 pathway and downregulates collagen genes while upregulating matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) genes, suggesting an anti-photoaging effect primarily mediated via the cAMP pathway. Beyond these actions, Decanal also exhibits antifungal properties and may contribute emollient characteristics, influencing product skin-feel.

Stability

Decanal maintains chemical stability under recommended storage conditions of 2-8 °C, requiring a tightly closed container in a dry, well-ventilated environment to prevent leakage. It is generally considered relatively neutral. Critical for skin contact applications, the purity of Decanal is paramount. Decomposition by heat can lead to the emission of acrid smoke and irritating fumes.

Safety

CIR Status
Not reviewed
Sensitization risk High

Decanal is associated with GHS Hazard Statements H315 (Causes skin irritation) and H319 (Causes serious eye irritation). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has identified it as a human toxicant or allergen with strong evidence, and EWG Skin Deep indicates a moderate concern for allergies and immunotoxicity. Despite these warnings, it is approved by the US FDA as a synthetic flavoring substance for direct addition to food.

Our Assessment

Questionable

While demonstrating promising in vitro anti-photoaging properties, Decanal carries notable risks of skin irritation and allergenicity, making its inclusion in precision skincare formulations highly questionable without established safe and effective topical concentrations and further human safety data.
