Stability
CI 77510 (Ferric Ferrocyanide) exhibits excellent stability across various environmental factors, including light, heat, weathering, and chemical exposure, ensuring enduring color performance. While it is intrinsically insoluble in water and organic solvents, it can be effectively dispersed in both water-based and oil-based formulations. Optimal stability is maintained within a pH range of 3.0 to 7.0, with its aqueous suspension typically showing a neutral to slightly acidic pH between 5.0 and 7.0. Exposure to strong acids or alkalis may lead to decomposition or color alteration.

Safety
Safety Profile
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has deferred evaluation of CI 77510, citing prior safety assessments by the FDA. The FDA authorizes CI 77510 as a color additive, exempt from certification, for use in externally applied cosmetics (including products for the eye area) and externally applied drugs, provided it meets FDA specifications. Specifically, the FDA mandates strict limits for soluble cyanide, permitting no more than 10 parts per million (ppm) in Ferric Ferrocyanide and Ferric Ammonium Ferrocyanide. In the US, it is not permitted for use in products intended for application on the lips. In the European Union, CI 77510 is approved for use in all cosmetics and personal care products under Annex IV, Part I of the Cosmetics Directive (Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009), with the critical condition that it must be free from cyanide ions.
