Science

Carmine imparts its distinctive bright red color through carminic acid, its principal component. Carminic acid interacts with molecules within the product's substrate, forming chemical bonds that manifest as a vivid red pigment. Beyond its primary role as a colorant, it also functions to mask undesirable tones in formulations.

Stability

Carmine lake exhibits high stability to heat and light when formulated within its optimal pH range of 6.0 to 12.0. A consistent red color is maintained between pH 4.0 and 10.0. However, carmine solutions are susceptible to acidity; low pH conditions may induce precipitation, leading to insoluble red spots, which can often be reversed by elevating the pH above 7.0. While it is insoluble in water and diluted acids, it demonstrates slight solubility in alcohol and oil, and is soluble in diluted alkali. It remains insoluble in glycerin and propylene glycol.

Safety

CIR Status
Deferred evaluation
Sensitization risk Moderate

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) has deferred evaluation of CI 75470, as its safety has been assessed by the FDA. The FDA approves Carmine for use in food, drugs, and cosmetics, requiring each batch to meet stringent specifications. It is notably the only organic pink/red colorant permitted for use around the eye area in the US. In the EU, CI 75470 is listed in Annex IV, Part I, of the Cosmetics Regulation, permitting its use without restriction in cosmetic products provided purity requirements (specified in directive 95/45/CE) are fulfilled. While generally non-toxic when applied topically, it carries a risk of allergic reactions in individuals sensitive to insect-derived products.
